Your Next Marketing Asset May Not Live on Your Website

TODAY’S FORECAST

For years, the basic internet marketing model was straightforward: create something valuable, put it on your website, get Google to rank it, and bring people to you.

AI is beginning to change that equation.

One of the more interesting signals came from an unlikely place: John Lewis.

The British retailer recently announced a YouTube talk show featuring interviews and conversations with public figures. It looks like a brand-content play, but there is another reason behind it: increasing the company’s visibility in AI-powered search.

John Lewis says searches influenced by AI grew from 0.3% to 2.5% in a year.

That number is still small. The direction matters more.

The emerging goal is no longer simply getting someone to visit your website. It is getting your expertise into the information environment AI uses to form an opinion about you.

Your Website Is No Longer the Whole Battlefield

The traditional marketing instinct is to keep building assets you own.

More articles. More landing pages. More SEO content. More pages designed to bring visitors back to your domain.

Those assets still matter.

But AI search introduces another layer.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, or another AI system for a recommendation, the answer may be shaped by information spread across many different places.

Your website can be one of those places.

So can YouTube.

So can a podcast interview.

So can LinkedIn.

So can another website quoting your work, a case study published elsewhere, a professional directory, a news article, or a customer discussing their experience.

Marketing is becoming less about controlling one destination and more about building a recognizable body of evidence across the web.

What Counts as a Marketing Asset Is Expanding

A useful YouTube interview may eventually be more valuable than another generic blog post.

A thoughtful podcast appearance may carry more authority than ten articles written for search traffic.

A distinctive idea that gets repeated and referenced across several platforms may become easier for AI systems to associate with you.

These things used to look like supporting marketing.

They may increasingly become part of the infrastructure of your reputation.

The Small Business Version

You do not need a production studio or a celebrity interviewer.

The opportunity for a smaller business is much simpler.

Start with one idea you understand unusually well.

Something your customers repeatedly misunderstand.

Something your competitors explain poorly.

Something you have learned from years of doing the work.

Then make that idea easy to encounter in more than one place.

  • Explain it clearly on your website.
  • Turn it into a useful video.
  • Discuss it in an interview or podcast.
  • Share the strongest insight on LinkedIn.
  • Build a case study around it.
  • Look for credible third-party places where the idea can be referenced.

This is different from turning one article into twenty pieces of generic content.

The goal is not volume.

The goal is recognition.

One Idea, Several Places

Imagine you have six hours available for marketing.

You could spend those six hours producing another 2,500-word article that lives only on your own website.

Or you could use those six hours to develop one genuinely original idea, publish the definitive version on your site, record a short video explaining it, share a sharp version on LinkedIn, and use it as the basis for an interview or case study.

The second approach gives the idea more places to be discovered, referenced, discussed, and associated with you.

As AI increasingly mediates how people research businesses, that may become much more valuable.

THE FORECAST

Make Your Expertise Difficult to Miss

Take the best idea your business knows that your competitors do not explain particularly well.

Give it a name if you can.

Explain it clearly.

Put the strongest version on your website.

Then give that idea several credible places to exist.

The businesses that win the next phase of search may not be the ones publishing the most content.

They may be the businesses whose expertise is easiest for the internet to recognize.

The opportunity is not to be everywhere.

It is to make the right ideas associated with your business hard to overlook.
